"He’s More Than Just a Jerk" introduces us to Sally Freeman, a gifted alcoholic who at times, displays a striking level of innocence. At 15-years-old, Sally unwittingly attracts the eye of John Haines, a 32-year-old married man struggling with alcoholism and drug addiction. The relationship ultimately leads to marriage in later years, which ends in divorce after less than two years after he physically assaults her.

 

The narrative then fast-forwards to when Sally meets James Roberts, a musician and executive who is unemployed and 12 years her senior. He eventually takes on the role of CEO at a prestigious non-profit organization where Sally works in San Francisco. After Sally is laid off, she moves in with her former boss James, and eventually, they marry. However, after years of psychological abuse perpetrated by James, their marriage ends after less than three years. The aftermath is devastating, as it leaves Sally homeless and penniless, with her cat.

 

The narrative offers insight into Sally's increasing trauma and the bonds she makes with the homeless community, while she faces ongoing distress from the very system meant to support her.
